Udupi, Feb 28: The members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will stage a dharna against the proposed move of Udupi City Municipal Council to increase the licence fee, in front of the CMC office on Monday February 29.

Addressing presspersons, former MLA and BJP leader Raghupati Bhat, said that the CMC had in its general body meeting on January 30 decided to increase the licence fee by 300 times on business establishments. But as per The Karnataka Municipalities Manual, the CMC had no power to take licence fees above Rs. 500. The decision of the CMC was against the norms of the manual and  therefore illegal.

Even more astonishing was the decision of the CMC to impose a licence fee on professionals and consultancies, which was wrong as they were not businesses. Besides this, the fee had to be imposed on businesses and not on the basis of square feet of the building, road or on basis of workers employed in a firm. Since the CMC was already collecting property tax through the self-assessment scheme, there was no need to collect property tax on square feet basis.

Hence, the CMC should withdraw its resolution of increasing the licence fee and maintain a status quo as the measure was both illegal. The BJP councillors had opposed the decision of the CMC during the general body meeting. But the Congress got it passed it through majority vote. The CMC was also taking a long time in giving Completion Certificates to those who had constructed buildings above 20,000 square feet.

The workers of the BJP will take out a procession from the Clock Tower to the CMC, where they will stage a dharna against the proposed increase in licence fee on Monday. Besides party members, traders and others will participate in the dharna, Bhat said.

Municipal councillors Vasanti Shetty, Geeta Shet and Yashpal Suvarna and BJP leaders Raghavendra Kini and Kiran Kumar were present.
